Qalam school was opened at the outskirts of a small subdivision of Rawalpindi known as Gulistan Colony, situated behind the famous Ayub Park, off the Grand Trunk road. This area was chosen due to the presence of shack-type dwellings in the vicinity, expecting to take in children from those and neighboring communities. Within the 48 hours of opening the school we were flooded with admissions
